Long-Term Care Supervision

The three municipalities in charge of the Long-Term Care (LTC) Supervision are Gentofte, Silkeborg and Hjørring.

The Municipal Councils of the relevant municipalities are responsible for performing the LTC supervision tasks set out in the LTC Supervision Act (Ældretilsynsloven).

The LTC Supervisory body supports nursing homes, assisted living facilities and holistic care providers in ensuring quality holistic care through counselling and guidance. The LTC supervisory body also performs risk-based and reactive supervision of the quality of holistic care.

The Senior Citizens hotline (Ældrelinjen)

Senior citizens, relatives, care personnel, etc. can anonymously contact the Senior Citizens hotline, which is part of the LTC Supervisory body, and notify them of conditions in care units or with care providers that cause concern.

It is always recommended to reach out to the care unit or the provider in question before contacting the hotline. If the supervisory body finds that the inquiry gives rise to concern about the quality of care, the supervisory body will conduct a reactive supervision.

The Municipality’s individual supervision and complaint guidance

The municipality that has made the decision on the care and assistance provided for an individual citizen, conducts individual supervision to ensure that it continues to fulfil its purpose. The municipality must, among other things, pay attention to whether there is a need to provide other forms of assistance. Follow-up must take place based on the citizen’s circumstances and, as far as possible, in cooperation with the citizen.

If you are dissatisfied with a specific decision regarding care and assistance, you may file a complaint about the decision with the municipality within four weeks after receiving notice of the decision.

The municipality will then reassess the case. If the municipality upholds the decision, it will forward the decision and case documents to the National Social Appeals Board.

Legislation

The rules on LTC Supervision are set out in the Act on LTC Supervision and the Executive Order on LTC Supervision.

The rules on individual supervision are set out in article 31, subsection 2 of the Senior Citizens Act.
