Ministry of Senior Citizens

Responsibilities and policy area of the Ministry of Senior Citizens

In Denmark, more than 1 million people are 65 years or older. The share is increasing. Many senior citizens live active and healthy lives, but a significant group of elderly people struggle with illness, burnout, and loneliness.

In the Ministry of Senior Citizens, we work to improve the services offered to senior citizens, aiming for a good and healthy otium and a dignified elderly care. The offers for elderly citizens are anchored in the Services Act. They include personal and practical help and care, food service, rehabilitation, etc.

The overall responsibility for the quality and organization of the offered help lies with the municipality. Help is offered after a concrete and individual assessment of the citizen's need for help and support. Accordingly, the municipality is responsible for the specific content and level of the local elderly policy, within national legislative framework.

The Ministry of Senior Citizens also works with policy development and legislation in the field, and handles ministerial and parliamentary services.
